Make the portrait work with the shape of the body. We teach you to read the area’s volume and light so you can position the face, orient its gaze and keep its most expressive features visible.

Prepare your own tones
Create the portrait’s tones from just a few colours. We mix a skin-tone range, distinguish the hair from the fire and adjust lightness, hue and saturation so each colour has a purpose in the piece.

Draw a stencil that lets you work
Choose your guides at actual size and position the stencil with the anatomy in mind, without overloading it.

Build the volume first
Start with the masses of hair and the face base. Watch how each layer leaves room for the next.

Bring the face to life with colour
Add tones and warm nuances to skin, eyes and lips. Decide where to concentrate contrast and where to let the image breathe.
